good times with cheap beer and karaoke.

After being holed up at home all weekend, I had to get out of the house last night, so I figured I’d head across the street to ReJavaNate and get a little work done on my Roman story, and maybe go visit Cactus’s reading.

Work got done. There were three people that read, and despite several attempts to get me on the mic, I enjoyed listening to interpretations of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” and David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” in that, you know, ironic hipster way.

After the reading, Jennifer came by and it was decided we should head down to the Ellis Island Casino for some karaoke. I don’t sing, but I like the people watching aspect.

And man, was there some people watching. Metalheads singing White Lion, an Elvishead somewhere in his 50s-60s singing his own version of “Blue Suede Shoes,” and the random girl who killed Pat Benetar’s “Love Is A Battlefield.” Not to mention the folks getting drunk on $1.50 microbrews. I had a couple of hefeweisens myself. Fairly good beer for the price, I should say.

I think the best part of the evening for me was talking to one of the guys about how A Night At The Opera is probably the best Queen album. And he couldn’t believe I knew “The Prophet’s Song.” Dude. Come on.

Music : Nina Simone - Here Comes The Sun

a music post.

Man, it’s been a long week. I was all set to get my running together, get my diet under some semblance of sanity, and write a lot. I started off with a few miles of running, over 1000 words, and somewhat of a meal plan for the week. And then my website went into the toilet.

But, everything’s fixed. I’ll be back to everything tomorrow. Today, I’m just. Drained.

Anyway. I wanted to post a few things that I really like to listen to right now.

Michael Jackson – “Remember The Time (siik remix)”: Dear Mike. I know it’s been so long since we’ve imagined green grass and blue skies, hammocks swinging under the patio shade, reading books and taking siestas in the pool, the ice-cold Cokes afterward, maybe after dark, taking a drive down the I-15 past the Strip and feeling the summer air between our fingers. I know it’s been so long since that sweet, sweet kiss on the cheek. Since movie nights on the floor. But I remember you.

The Roots – “Get Busy”: If there were a sound my heart made at the gym, it would sound like ?uestlove. It’s the kind of sound I’ve always wanted to make with my hands, but could never get past the clumsy coordination I have. And it makes me want to rap. I’ve never had that inclination before.

Art Of Noise – “Moments In Love (Caspa Remix)”: Dubstep is a genre of music I’ve been scratching the surface of for the past year or so, mainly because of two fantastic records by Burial. The Art Of Noise I’ve loved since middle school. Top 5 songs? “Moments In Love” would be in there. I’m fascinated by it, and I can’t tell you why. Maybe because it’s the predecessor to most electronically ambient music with a beat. Or maybe it’s just hypnotizing.

“A Deeper Love (Chew Fu & Steve Clisby Vocal Mix)”: The tag says “Aretha Franklin & The Rolling Stones” as the artist, but the guy singing on this song makes me think that it’s a soul classic from the 60′s or 70′s when, in fact, it’s by C + C Freakin’ Music Factory.

Yeah? And that post a couple of days ago about shit I shouldn’t be listening to but can’t help it? Yeah, you can add American Idol‘s David Cook covering Chris Cornell covering Michael Jackson to that list. For some reason, his chubby little face got a whole bunch of sexy after hitting that last note.

Or maybe it’s just been so long that I’m easily flustered at this point. But Jesus.

i’m a dumbass.

So. I’ve been having some domain issues this week, and thought I’d gotten everything backed up…

except for the huge database of my blog that has posts going back to July 2001. On the one hand, it’s just stuff, right. But a lot of those early posts were about Dad, and going to shows, and a lot of those old posts help me to remember things. I can’t just let those go like burning an old journal.

(Lots of crying this week. Seriously.)

After figuring and finageling, the great folks at Bluehost were patient with me and I finally got all this resolved with their help.

They rock my socks off.

(And I’m going to back up my database next time. I swear.)

.

i may have royally screwed myself and lost a shitload of posts. like, years worth of stuff.

it may be bad, it might get fixed. i hope it’ll get fixed.

behind the scenes stuff.

The site may be going down for a day or so while I get some stuff worked out.

Nothing serious, just some issues with my old domain.

things that maybe i shouldn’t blog about because i really am that cool.

Like the fact that I’m starting to feel invested in Dancing With The Stars. Go home, Steve Guttenberg!

Pop songs that I should not be listening to, but I can’t help it:
Amanda Jenssen, “Do You Love Me?”
Leona Lewis, “Bleeding Love”
–Actually, Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” I can help but listen to, because it’s a great song:

After last weekend’s blowout I stayed the fuck home and cleaned and did laundry this weekend (and ran 6 miles while watching games on Saturday.)That I didn’t do any writing last week because I literally was still recovering from St. Pat’s weekend.Got about 100 pages left in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and I kinda don’t want to give it back to the person I lent it from. But it’s such a beautifully worn-out copy. I can’t have more bad karma on me right now.

the ides of march.

So we celebrated St. Patrick’s day on Saturday, the excuse being that the Catholic church moved it to the 15th because the 17th started off Holy Week. Fantastic, because everything fell into place.

ick.

First off, this song (and Steve Martin) make me want to learn banjo:

I don’t want to think about the fact that it’s March already.
